Speiker mountain is one of my favorite mountains close to home. Every trip in warm weather you will see Pikas and Marmots and this time a Grizzly that I could get my spotting scope onto and sketch from memory.
There were some caribou around many years ago but their population has almost vanished now. In the early 1950's the Japanese were all over that mountain with vehicles searching for coal. So now there are still old roads there. From a mile across the valley I saw what I thought was a pickup with a white canopy...all I could see was this white something moving in a steady, even way. As I got my field glasses on it, it did a sharp uphill turn and quickly vanished over the ridgeline. It was a huge white wolf!
I continue to visit Speiker...expecting more surprises.

We have a lot of grizzly in our local mountains.
