This was painted several years ago after I had returned from a search for Doug Grant's horses. Doug was guiding in the Elliot Ranch area. This is prime grizzly county. During the night a bear ran-off two of his horses. This was in late August. Our Moose season opens August 15.
Over the rest of the season, vague reports would come in that they were still in the same area. On Halloween week-end we set out to find them. It was now or never...winter would kill them. We did find them eventually, fat and happy and unwilling to come in for oats. It was cowboy-up time and Doug got a rope on one of them and then the other followed. It snowed hard tht night and we were lucky to get out.
Outfitters lose horses often. They can run like a thoroughbred if they want to...with hobbles on. They lose more horses to hobbled runaways then to grizz...but a grizz encounter is more exciting to paint.
