My buddy got a limited entry draw on a California Bighorn in the Similikameen Country right near the border, west of Charlie Russell's prairie country. We made a fast 12 hour
trip south and when we arrived, the trail head was jammed with empty trucks and horse trailers. The one guy that was around said we may as well give up because guys had been up there scouting for a week. Opening day was tomorrow. We had a buckskin that we used as a packhorse and started up anyway.
We were glassing for sheep the next a.m. just at timberline. A guy was coming out leading two empty saddle horses away across the valley. When he finally reached us, he asked, "how much money you got on ya?" We asked why and he stated that he could tell us where a herd of sheep were as he was a guide and had just unloaded two hunters. He said he was kidding and would tell us anyway!
A HUNDRED YARDS RIGHT BELOW US IN THE TIMBER...HE CLAIMS HE SAW THEM FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE VALLEY!!! and he rode off.
We looked at each other and wondered if he just wanted to see us scramble downhill through a steep shale slide and thick timber. Down we went.
BANG! One shot and we had a legal ram and we are on our way out at 0700 hours on opening day. That camel buckskin never drank the whole trip. This sounds like a Charlie Russell story that has been updated.
The mountains down there are different from up north and this painting reflects their profile...sawtooth.
